Trauma NP Scope of Practice

Hi All,

I will be starting an AGACNP program this fall in the hopes of becoming a trauma NP at the current hospital in which I practice which is a Level One trauma center in the Northeast. My question is about treating pediatric patients. As an AGACNP I understand that kids are out of my scope , however I will most likely be completing the NIFA RNFA program and am wondering if I would still be able to participate in pediatric traumas as an RNFA before obtaining CPNP-AC. Any advice or experience would be appreciated!!

    You would be able to care for children at the RN level only. However you really would be opening yourself to huge liability by crossing back and forth from NP to RN in the same dept. Your beSt bet is to care only for adults or those pts in your scope of practice as an NP until you complete the Peds portion.

    At the facility where I currently work as a full time SICU/ED nurse, the trauma NP is a part of a patient's care from the moment they are admitted to the trauma bay until they are discharged. The TNP responds to trauma codes, helps to coordinate operative care of the patient or admission to the floor, rounds on patients on the trauma service including in the ICU, does procedures including intubation, chest tube insertion, etc. Really a wonderful role with a lot of variety.
