I would never recommend going to the float pool until you have some experience in OB. By staying in one place for a bit you have a chance to develop your knowledge (I have never done transplant, but I imagine it's just a bit different from OB!) and to get to know the nurses on your unit. The standard route at our hospital is PP, then L&D, then nursery for people who want to work all three.
Usually we start off in pp, then gravitate to nursery and delivery. While on pp, we teach you how to set up tables and a few little things here and there..Good for you for wanting to know all three areas. You usually prefer one but even with that fact, it is a great idea to become familiar with all three....

i currently work in transplant surgery (mostly liver and kidney) and am making a move to work in ob. i was wondering if any more experience nurses had any advice. either i can work in L&D, postpartem or nursery, OR be a part of the float pool and float between all three. i would rather do the float pool, but am concerned about feeling like an outsider among other staff members and/or not having continuity of care with patients. any suggestions?
