Hi all. I would like to ask all of you on your thoughts of me working on a Transplant, General Medicine floor. I just finished an interview and it seemed like they are interested in me. I am scared that I may not do well or survive this unit.
I have applied for their newgrad program, however the actuall newgrad classes will start next Jan (their newgrad program are held only twice a year-- one in Jan and one in July). They will start me with a preceptor-- 4 wks on days and last 2 on nights which is the shift that I will be hired on. The advantage I'm told by the recruiter is that by the time I do go the class on Jan, I will have hands on experience already and the classes would be more meaningfull. And I guess thats sounds true. What do you all think about this??
Also, I graduated nsg school 5 yrs ago and didnt go right away into the profession because I was pregnant and I wanted to raise my baby myself and not by a babysitter. I have been a patient care assistant for the last 2 yrs so I think it will help me but I am worried that being out of school for 5 yrs will affect my performance. :uhoh21: I passed my boards 2 months ago and I'm ready to start my nsg career which I love.
Do you all think it's a good idea for me to start in a transplant, generel medicine floor considering my situation?? Any advice I would deeply appreciate. Thank you for your time and God Bless.

Hi!!!!!!!! I am a brand new grad myself..........May 8th this year!!! I just started my very first RN job on a transplant floor, and i just LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Ours sounds a little different b/c we have transplants, our speciality , and some other GI adn Gastric Bypass Surgeries.
I think it is a wonderful specialty!!!! Its so rewarding to care for people after they get an organ they have been waiting so long for!!! Its such a happy time for them! Also, if they should have any illness, rejection, complication of any kind in the future they always come back to our floor, and its neat seeing the same faces!
I have learned SO MUCH since I started. Everybody is VERY helpful. They gave me a VERY GOOD orientation, and if I come across any situations that I'm unsure about I can always ask and people are more than happy to help out! I still deal w/ all types of illness, diabetes, heart disease, kindey disease..etc, as I would on any other floor. Also get to use all my technical skills, and I hung 2 units of blood last week for the first time!!!!!!!
Long story short, its a GREAT place to get started!!!!! I say go for it!!!!! :) :roll

HI there,
Well, sounds like an exciting area.
It is up to you whether you would like to start your job without that Newgrad program. It sounds like a "red flag" to me. "Red flag" as in, why are they in such a hurry to start you off right away? they may be short of nurses, and need staff now....?? Do you know what I mean?. Something to think about.
You should not be another body to them. You deserve to start off in safe, nurturing environment, with enough time to get aquainted with the routine of the unit. I would ask why is this position open and evaluate what they say to you. If they seem to be not as open as to why, or perhaps seem annoyed by your questions, then take this as a "red flag" and move on.
Again, just be careful of these "we will put you to work right off the bat and then when you can attend the class".
But you do what is best for you and your family.
Stay tuned to this site, you may get better advice ..
Take care and God bless.
