Transitioning from Student Nurse to Registered Nurse

Published

Hi everybody! I am in my last semester of nursing school and am excited to almost be done. I have a question to all you working nurses, what are some tips and tricks for new nurses working the floor? How did you overcome your fears when you first started working? Who/what helped you the most when transitioning from student nurse to a licensed nurse? Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Hi good luck on the boards! I would say the best thing is to have a positive attitude, no matter where your first job is try to learn as much as possible and take advantage of their learning opportunities. If they offer cme and seminars go to them. If you have bad interactions with staff or patients, learn from that abd be better the next time. Obviously you will learn more nursing core skills but the other things like stress management, advocating for yourself and patient, learning time management and work life balance are very importabt to your career going foreward. Also, be open to new experiences and don't assume to judge people. You may learn suprozing things from peers and patients and you may also fall into a specialty you think you may hate that you may truly thrive in.

Good luck!

We literally had a whole class about this called "Transitions in Nursing" or something close to that. Now I'm wondering how common it is because people ask these types of questions all the time.

I don't remember much from the class except two phases new nurses go through ...the "honeymoon period" and "reality ShOcK"!
