Transitioning to Medical, Critique my resume!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi All,

I have been working in psych since i graduated in 2013 and have really wanted to join the medical side for a while. My hospital system is striking and I can't continue working at a place that does not value its employees, and I see no point in keeping my seniority (3 years HA) if there will be no benefits left 20 years from now. SO I'm asking for your help. I'm applying for float pool positions and general med/surg to get my feet back on the ground. Please give me feedback on my resume and cover letter! You guys rock!

I'm not so saavy on how to attach things here, so I copied and pasted the best I could. The style looks different (bolded items, spaced out, etc) but content is what I'm most worried about. Thank you!!!

Dear Hiring Manager:

I am writing to apply for a Registered Nurse position at *** on the *** unit. I am pleased to learn of your need to fill this position, as it is in line with my interests and I would be an asset to your team.

In 2013, I graduated from St. Catherine University, where I successfully completed a variety of clinical experiences that prepared me for a diverse patient population and allowed me to develop excellent critical thinking skills. Since graduating, I have been employed at Abbott Northwestern Hospital on the Child/Adolescent Psychiatry unit. My employment there has developed my communication and leadership skills as I have recently been trained as a charge nurse.

My references, if requested, will attest that I have utilized my education to help prepare me for a wide variety of patient populations as a positive, forward-thinking new nurse. I believe that my experiences have prepared me for a nursing position at ***, and I look forward to speaking with you soon regarding employment opportunities. Please do not hesitate to contact me at *my phone number* if you have any questions regarding my application.

Sincerely,

My name

I tried to take pictures from my phone too, but they didn't work out too well. Sorry, I promise I'm fluent in Epic.

You want to keep the action words in the past tense for all your experience. I know, you're currently working there now, but if the resume doesn't have consistency, it won't look professional. Good luck!

Good thought! It bothered me too but it also feels weird to write it in past tense. I think I'll change that.
