Transitioning into first FNP job....any tips?

Published

I will start my first FNP job in a few months. I've transitioned into new nursing roles before and they involved some shadowing, precepting, etc. This job is not where I did the bulk of my practicum hours, so I can't train that way. How do I learn the billing process, referral base and all of that type of stuff? The office I am working with is amazing, but since my start date is kind of far off, we haven't really spelled out the training process yet. How did your first job go and how did you train?

My experience for NP employment has been much different than RN jobs.

So far my training has been minimal for NP positions. It has almost been "Here is the exam room, here is your scheduale your first patient is in a half hour."

I have had a slighlty lighter scheduale for the first week or two as a learning curve for the jobs but I have yet to have a structured orientation with a preceptor the same way I did with RN jobs.

My NP orientation and training has been very minimal as well. My second day I shadowed a doc for two whole hours. The very next day, I started taking my own patients. And yes, it was like here is the patient schedule, boom, go to work! From what I hear a lot of NP jobs are like that. They just kind of expect you to take off and the docs I have worked have also expected this too. So, it's kind of hard. I would say be clear before you start a new NP job about what your orientation is going to be like. Unfortunately they may not have the time to really train. Just pace yourself if that's the case. Ask a lot of smart questions, don't complain and go with the flow! That's what I did and it seemed to work.
