Transferring NP license to California, but did not take Anatomy lab or Physiology lab

Published

I am currently applying for RN and NP licensure in California.

I recently found out that California requires Anatomy with lab and Physiology with lab.

I took an Anatomy class that did not have a lab component.

I also took a separate Physiology class that did not have a lab component.

I have been working for 3 years as an NP in Massachusetts and also Nevada, and have never run into this prerequisite issue for licensure in these states.

Can anyone tell me if I would need to retake Anatomy and Physiology, both with lab, or if I could simply take the lab-only courses for each one?

I found a place that offers standalone lab courses for Anatomy and Physiology.

I plan to call the CA board of nursing about this, but if someone can give me an answer sooner, I would greatly appreciate it.

I would ask this question to the BRN directly. From what I understand, California requires that if applicants need course remediation to meet the state's requirements, courses must be taken from a BRN approved program (which means the program must be in California). I sure hope this is not going to be the case but check directly with the nursing board.

Wow.

Please, I intend no disrespect, but I can't help but express my shock that it is possible to become an NP without having anatomy and physiology without a lab component. This is the sort of thing that challenges our credibility when it comes to full practice authority. If I may ask, what schools did you attend for your RN and NP programs?

If you would prefer not to say, I understand....

are you sure that your A&P course did not come with lab? Usually it comes with a lab mine was a combined anatomy and physiology (which is 3 hours lecture and 1 hour lab) = 4 credits for each A&P1 and 2. If you haven't already, perhaps getting your school catalog would help with the description of courses. It was a prerequisite for to get in entry level nursing for the school I attended.
