I know someone that works in a correctional facility in Michigan. They received 6 weeks of orientation but no real training in the correctional specialty. I was wondering if this is common in other states.

I received 2 days of power point style orientation and 2 weeks of shadowing another nurse. I'm not sure if this is common in Florida. There is apparently a Certified Correctional Health Professional course you can take that my company will pay for, but I haven't heard anything about it since my initial interview.

Im looking into correctional nursing, I live in south FL. Did you go through and agency, contact or applied directly online? How do you like it? What is it like?

Nope no training. There hadn't been a onsite nurse for 10 months, just people coming in for sick call and passing meds. No orientation whatsoever. If I hadn't been a seasoned nurse with a varied background I would have ran away shrieking. Now, I have everything set up the way I want it. It is one of the best jobs I have ever had.
Do you receive continuing education credits or courses like trauma nursing?
I received continuing education in nonviolent crisis intervention. I previously worked psych, so no new information for me. I also have to complete annual training on urgent care.
No onsite emergency response training?
Nope. In fact I had to redo all the policies so that they would meet prison standards.
