Training in Chest X-Ray Interpretation for PICC Tip Position?

Published

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well. I'm a PICC nurse and I've been wondering about the training others have received regarding chest X-ray interpretation specifically for PICC tip positioning.

Have any of you received formal training in this area? If so, who provided the training and what was the name of the course? I would really appreciate any recommendations or insights you might have.

Thank you!

We are not trained in CXR interpretation; if placement cannot be confirmed via 3CG then we place an order for a STAT CXR per protocol and wait until a formal read is provided by the radiologist.

I was trained through our local INS chapter.

Lynn Hadaway offers a course and I believe many of the major vascular access consultants offer courses.

I have heard of people going through local training as well through their radiology department. This requires your local radiologist to work with you and create a course for you and then sign off. This is generally easier than it sounds since it is usually an hour or two of classroom work and then you reading a few dozen to a couple hundred radiographs.

Same process and procedure for me.
