~~~Top Ten Medications~~~
Published
Can you tell I just can't quite slow down for summer vacation and am looking for studies to work on!!
I know each unit is specific to medications, but if you had time to learn the top 10 or 15 medications that all nurses should be aware of what would you suggest?
Thanks again for helping keep my mind busy over summer break!!
rxlist.com (http://www.rxlist.com/script/main/hp.asp) has a list of the top 200 drugs that are dispensed by pharmacies listed alphabetically and by number of prescriptions. that should give you an idea of what is being commonly prescribed.
if you go to the pharmacy area of walgreen's.com (http://www.walgreens.com/?ext=goobrand+walgreens1&gclid=cpsortfcv4scfqymzqodxso52g) and click on "drug information" at the left side bar, a list will come up of the most commonly accessed drugs that people look for information about.
another thing you can do is think about the top reasons people are admitted to the hospitals: heart attacks, strokes and hypertension, pneumonia and other respiratory diseases, gi bleeding and there are underlying utis that they get as well as diabetes everywhere these days.
you should get a jump on learning about the different insulins and oral diabetic meds as this is often confusing to students. in fact, you should study and learn the difference between type i and ii diabetes until you know the pathophysiology of the two in your sleep.
you should get a copy of the syllabus for your next semester, if you haven't already, so you have an idea of what to focus your study on.
Thanks~ I did finish my 2nd med surg class with a B, almost an A and have the 3rd one in Aug, which I do have the syllabus, etc. for already from a previous stuent.
We just get so much information and so I am backtracking and working on pulling out the most important information and keeping my brain working, so I don't forget it all!
I'm just looking for more to learn and trying to figure out what I should focus on and really, really learn it well.
Thanks for the suggestions!
