Okay, I "re-took" my skills portion of the state test yesterday. Now I'm in the phase of torturing myself with second guessing my steps. I had two skills I am nervous about...one is blood pressure. I took it 4 times and went with what I heard...even though the Test Observer told me to start with 100 and I ended up going higher because I was getting a systolic of upper 120's. Had to go with what I know I heard. Then I had mouthcare - comatose resident. Easy skill, right?! Well now I realize I missed a step that could cost me. I wiped the mouth area but forgot to actually wash their face with a washcloth. That could be the make it or break it for me. This is the 2nd time I've taken the skills portion and don't know if I can do it a 3rd time if I don't pass this one. It took it's toll on me both physically and mentally. Stomach was in knots for at least a week before and I did like anyone would do and studied all the skills, not knowing which 5 I would get. Guess I'm not perfect, as I did realize I missed a step. Does anyone have any encouraging words or insight as to whether I could have passed the mouth care - comatose resident skill? I feel really dumb and am beating myself up over it.

You only have to pass the skills test once, so congratulations! In the real world the steps don't matter as much- the resident usually likes things done their own way.

If you are constantly nervous, it's gonna show when you take the test. Just be calm, practice practice and more practice. That's the only way to go. Fortunately the evaluator was a new one and she was super friendly. All my classmates passed the test. wohoo!
