Ok, Ok, I know that sounds really bad, but maybe I am.
Ok, before everyone freaks out here, what I mean is, after reviewing ALL my textbooks for NS, I really feel like I didn't retain enough from my pre-reqs, namely A&P. I seriously could not explain to you right now how the circulatory system works, the heart, pulmonary system...nada. I wanted to get some sort of A&P review book, but honestly, even A&P for dummies looks too in depth. Isn't there somewhere I can go for a quick rundown of each system and the basics? :uhoh21: (does that even exist in A&P! LOL)
I already have a ton of reading to do for first day of class (two weeks) so I don't have tons of time to relearn all this. Did any of you feel the same way going into NS? I also have Patho this semester and that textbook was REALLY scary when you can't remember A&P!!!!:stone
Also...I am freaking about the math...on the NET I scored horridly on basic math skills but excellent on advanced math such as algebra. Apparantly I have forgotten the basics! Must be all the advanced chem classes I took when I was going for dietetics!
Did any of you feel this way before school? Were your worst fears realized....you ARE too stupid...or were you fine once in school. I know there is a lot to know and that you will never feel 100% confident, but were there atleast others in the same boat??
Needing help here. Anxiety level is thru the roof. Pray for me!:rotfl:

Hi Thrashej,
Relax. Don't talk like that about yourself. You actually know more than you think you do. I'm a student as well and sometimes I feel the same way. For exams, I always find out that I know more than I think I do. Once you start with new material, it will all come back to you. I know you don't have to know every single detail of A&P, just remember the main ideas. Our instructors also make the this point clear; to not waste time on every small detail, because it's not necessary. Remember, it's always good to be underassured than overassured, because these people tend to work harder and end up doing better. Hope this helps!! Good luck!!

thrashej- I totally feel your anxiety! I haven't even started my prereq's for nursing ( I start ASN in Aug) and I am so terrified of the unknown!! I too struggle with any Math and was placed in a precollege course (which didn't surprise me). But my college offers free tutoring in the Math Lab. Am am about 50% confident right now but hope it will improve when I get in school and take it one day at a time. You really sound like me when I freak out (which is like every other day) and everybody tells me to take a deep breath and do the best I can. I try to tell myself that the worst that could happen is that I do fail to test into the actual nursing program. But I WON'T let it happen. If for some reason I do fail I will have to try again. I realize that if I want to do this bad enough than I will fight for it-even if it means retaking some classes. Give yourself a break. Life is too short to worry yourself into an anxiety attack! It's not like the verdict for failing is sudden death. You will get through it. "God" never gives us more than we can handle.
I am so glad I found this forum, aren't you guys?! We can all vent and give support. Isn't that just what we need as students! What are some of your biggest fears once you get your degree and start working? Mine are gruesome injuries, contracting disease, and violent patients. Can any experienced people ease these fears?

Please don't say that you're too stupid for nursing school! Think positively...you'r going to do just fine. Most people find it difficult to retain a lot of information, such as that learned in A&P. When you take patho, you might have to go back and look up some info, and that's okay. The instructors don't expect you to have the book memorized. Also, if it seems like a lot of students don't remember the material, it will likely be covered again. Very few people retain information by memorization alone. It is only after you use this in clinical practice that it will really begin to make sense and stick with you. Don't be so hard on yourself!

At our school whenever they teach us something they start at the beginning again. Kind of like A&P all over again but they also give us the nursing part of the lesson and that is what we are tested on.. For example, if they are talking about the heart, they will explain the route of the blood through the body and say "remember from your A&P?" and sometimes we remember and sometimes I will bust out my A&P book again. Like with the heart for example. lol. But then the real lesson will be on congestive heart failure... a lot of time "it all comes back to me" or it sounds familiar.. I would not freak out at all.. you learned the foundation in A&P and you will apply it in your nursing classes.. You obviously are not going to know everything about every system.. Just review what you don't know DURING school. Like I would not review the respiratory system if you are learning about bone fractures.. Have faith that you learned what you needed to learn in your pre-reqs if you hadn't you would not be where you are.. I say take it one day at a time. I totally remember freaking out about that stuff too and i was sooo grateful when the instructors started their lessons with comments like "if you don't remember this then go back and review such and such." It made me realize i was not the only one that did not remember everything..
Hope that helps!!!!
