Hello there! I am new here, but actually I've followed the forum for quite a while...
I think about applying to ACNP program but wonder what kind of volunteer/or paid experience do I need? Emergency probably or surgery unit? I am shadowing the NP in my Student Health Center, but she provides mainly primary care. I am working/volunteering with kids in PICU(reading to them). I have tried to find a volunteer position for PICU(pediatric intensive care unit)or ICU, but no volunteers are alowed there.:)
Should I start volunteer at ER? I don't know what to do. I really don't have much time; I have only about 6 months before applying to the program, and really need hands-on experience. Do you have any suggestions/experiences? I'll greatly appreciate your help.
Thank you in advance and good luck to all!!!

yes i suggest volunteering in the ER. that is what i'm doing right now and although I don't get to do much other than answer phones and changing the linens after a patient is either discharged or admitted to a floor, it helps to be in the environment and being able to observe what roles the nurses and docs have. the hospital i volunteer at does not have an ACNP working in the ER but I believe just the experience being in the ER is good enough.
