TNCC and ODU coenrollment program

Hi everyone,

I was just accepted into Thomas Nelson Community College's nursing program, as well as Old Dominion University's RN-BSN program. I'm wondering if anybody has, or is attending either or both of these programs, and what your experience has been. What is you course load and schedule like? Do most students who coenroll in both programs get through all the classes ok?

Thanks!

Kelsey

Hi Kelsey,

Congratulations on your acceptances!

I've been accepted to the Spring 2016 class at TNCC as well! So excited to start! I'm not enrolled in the ODU concurrent program, but I do know someone who recently graduated from it, and she said that the course load was definitely manageable.

Looking forward to meeting you and our classmates at orientation in a few weeks! 😊

I am in my 3rd semester of this program, but at a different VA community college.

There are about 10 of us or so at my school doing it. It's not bad at all. One extra class per semester, with 2 the summer between first and second year of ADN, 2 in your last semester, and 2 the summer after you graduate ADN.

Pretty good deal too. Only gonna cost me around 11K extra and you get to be done with school for a while. I graduate with my ADN in May and will have BSN in August.

My only regret is that I may have been able to wait and have my future employer pay for the BSN, but I wanted to have the BSN to look more competitive.

Thats definitely something I am considering. I don't know how much support employers will provide to help with this - and if having a BSN will really make you a lot more hirable. I'm not even sure how long I will be in Virginia because my husband is in the military, so I might not be able to make a long commitment to a hospital anyways.

I am considering the TN-ODU Dual enrollment program. How is it going for you all so far?

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Its not bad so far. I'm only taking one class at ODU right now in addition to my full TNCC course load. Its mostly busy work, which gets very frustrating when you have a lot of other work for your TNCC classes. The workload itself isn't that bad, but I also don't have kids, and I'm not working, so its all relative. You typically have a paper due every other week, with some other work in between.

Are you currently enrolled in the nursing program at Thomas Nelson? If you're not, I would pay attention to application deadlines for ODU, since you can only start their program in the Spring or Fall. I started both programs at the same time this spring, but most people in my class that are planning on attending ODU are waiting until fall to start. It all depends on how quickly you want to finish your ODU classes, and if you want to add another course during your first semester, which will be very busy at TNCC.

So glad to find TNCC fellows here.

The Old Dominion University's RN-BSN program sounds pretty nice. Can it be done online? I currently live in williamsburg and I don't like driving...

Thank you very much!
