Tired of discrimination

Hi, Im RN and I'm also ESL (English second language) speaker and I cover my hair (for religious purposes). And I'n tired of being treated as crap by my management. I work for the same place for 4 years, as an aid, TMA and then RN. What I've notice that if you re not white American you will never be promoted, you will not get hours you want, you will be treated like crap. Of course all management is white americans. And as soon as one comes on the floor they soon get promoted to office/better schedule job.

I'm venting. Today the DON was on my floor, showing place around and didn't even say HI to me, while I was running around working short stuffed. She did find time to say HI and friendly chat with housekeeper who, guess what? White American lady.

I'm tired of being treated like a crap just because of the way I look and my accent. I think I'm good professional and want to be judged by my performance and not appearance.

Hmm , maybe regional? Im"white american" and havent gotten any promotions. Basically told Im lucky I even have a job. We have other-than-white management.Heck, the doctors- "white american" is the minority No one I work with get's special hours - we all work the same crappy hours- 3 shift rotations. Doesnt matter how long youve been there.

Maybe that person who spoke to the housekeeper knew the housekeeper?

I'd say find a different place of employment. .If youu feel you haven't been respected for 4 years, it isnt going to change. I get treated like crap by other "nationalities" .I deal with it if I want to keep an income.

You just became a RN in May of 2013, so you are a new grad, and had a baby in June of 2013 which means you had maternity leave for what six or eight weeks? That puts you into July or August.

So you have been working full time as a RN for about 5 months..... Could it be possible that your inexperience as a new grad still plays a factor and not you accent or religion?

Are these other "white americans" new grads? What degree do they have? Are you a ADN or BSN? There could be many reasons that you haven't been promoted yet. Why do you beleive as a new grad that you deserve to be promoted? Most new grads are not promoted.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that you are being discriminated against right now. If you feel this place doesn't appreciate you may want to start looking for another position.

talk to your supervisor and ask what you can do to be considered for promotion. If you are sending negeative vibes people will not want you for manager positions.

It appears that you have very little experience as an RN, particularly taking orientation and maternity leave into account. What promotions do you feel you are qualified for but have been passed over in favor of "white Americans"?

I doubt that you are being discriminated against. In my experience, everyone in America has rights, EXCEPT the white American.

Not to mention if it's managerial job you want, minimum BSN is required, more likely MSN. People don't get promoted just on good merit and no degree/experience. Sorry.

I have no idea whether your organization is discriminatory or not. You come across as angry, but it's unknown if you are angry due to the way you get treated, or treated poorly because of your attitude. Maybe you've just been in the same place too long, maybe they still see you as the same person hired in as an aide years ago. However, the suggestion of talking to your manager regarding preparing yourself for future promotions is a good one. Good Luck to you.
