How do travel nurses combat the blues over the holidays? Any tips for new travelers away from home for the first time?

I'm not a traveler, but this may be my first Christmas away from my family. They live in CA and I am in FL. At my previous job, I was always able to take off from work to go visit them. This year I am not so sure about it and it makes me pretty depressed. I think I am the only person at my job with immediate family so far away. I don't have any children, so that makes it even worse. My boyfriend (who I live with) has offered to stay here with me if I have to work (his family lives in CT), but if I am working on Christmas esp 12 hours) what is the point? He'll be alone all day. I requested a few day off at Xmas but I don't know if I'll get it. I told my boss I really need to know though because I need to buy a plane ticket. If I wait too much longer they'll be $800. Thank you for this thread! Is there anyone else out there in this situation?
