I am new grad RN starting my 2nd day of orientation at a skilled nursing facility. Yesterday, on my first day, I was given the full tour, watched some videos about abuse, resident rights, and HIPPA. Today I will be on the unit with another nurse who will be orienting me further. My orientation is 3 weeks (15 days). The DON said if I needed more time I will be given another week. Then I would be set loose on my own.
This place really seems like a great facility to work in and I want to make sure I do a great job.
For those of you who have worked at a Skilled Nursing Facility please give me some tips. I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

I have worked in a SNF since passing NCLEX last spring. I think the most important thing is to get organized at the beginning of your shift and have a plan for the day (of course things come up and you will probably have to change your plan). I always make sure I have everything I need before beginning my med pass so I don't have to stop to run get applesauce, water, juice, etc. Try to look at your TAR early in your shift to avoid 15 minutes before your shift if over discovering that there is a new dressing change to do that you didn't know about. I work mostly days and I look at my tx book as soon as I am done with my morning med pass so I can plan time for my tx in the afternoon.
One thing I would do differently if I could have my orientation again would be to focus more on learning the paper work and documentation. I was mostly worried about the med pass and txs, which are the easy part. You will develop your own routine in time. But I feel like I still don't know what forms and what kind of documentation I need for every situation. I wish I would have asked more questions about that.
Once you are on your own, don't be afraid to ask questions if you aren't sure of something.
Good luck.

Also, don't be overwhelmed the first days, you will find your own rhythm for med passes and paper work as you become familiar with it all. And remember you will always have days where you get behind due to other unexpected problems that crop up... Take a deep breath and keep going. It will become easier as you go. Good Luck!
