Tips for getting into a nursing program after high school?

Published

Hello! I'm currently a high school senior and have been one for about a month. My GPA is currently 2.5 and I'm worried this won't get me into a nursing program. I plan at starting in a community college, but I'm confused on the application process. Any tips to get me started? Thank you!

Have you already talked with your guidance counselor? S/he should be able to provide you with information about the transition to CC. The specific requirements may differ, depending upon your local college district & state requirements. For instance, in my part of the world new students have to take standardized tests to determine their placement in Math & English. Based upon those results, they may have to take remedial (non credit) courses at first.

Go ahead and gather information from all of the nursing programs in which you are interested. Usually, their web sites will include essential information for prospective students, including pre-requisites needed, admission tests, sample degree plans, as well as all the steps needed and deadlines for their admission process.

Your HS GPA may not be a limiting factor - especially for CC, as they usually have "open admissions". But - ALL of your for-credit college courses will count .... All. Of. Them. THIS is that "permanent record" that adults have always warned you about. Admission to nursing programs is very competitive. Low grades will have a lasting impact. This is your chance for a fresh start.

Wishing you the best of luck on your educational journey.
