So we are going to deliberately sicken animals when there is literally no chance that any sort of vaccine or effective treatment is going to be brought to market in time to be relevant for this virus? At some point history will look back upon this quite unkindly. What do they mean "there's no way to understand it". There are literally thousands of sick individuals from whom the virus can be cultured and upon whom various treatment modalities can be tested (a good place to start might be to see what Germany is doing in their hospitals since last time I checked Johns Hopkins site they literally didn't have a single death with over 600 cases).

They said "It's the only way to understand it." The research is into how to treat the sick, not produce vaccines.

Yes but we have lots of sick humans that we can try various treatments upon rather than making healthy animals sick.

I agree but the government has strict regulations concerning experimentation on human beings.

True, but we can use drugs “off label” for conditions such as Covid 19. In any case any emergent treatment from animals would also have to go through a clinical trial process. I frankly thought that we had stopped experimenting on primates long ago. We are talking about creatures capable of learning sign language.

I think they are baboons which, as far as I know, can't sign. I don't like that they are using animals either, and quite frankly, don't think it is necessary. It's probably all panic driven stupidity. In fact, I bet they will make a vaccine and have millions of doses ready for use. That will probably happen just after this thing dies out at the end of Summer. We shall see.
