Thinking about LPN school

Published

So, I've always thought about going to nursing school but talked myself out of it. I finally signed up to do a cna course and I'm almost finished with that. I did cna first to see if I could see myself in the nursing field. So far I really like it, and I've enjoyed the clinicals. I've been looking into different opportunities to start my advancement, and I'm thinking LPN is my next step. I'm going to talk to a school adviser on Monday. I've seen sooooo many mixed reviews on LPN. Some say that they are being phased out, some say there is going to be a high demand. I'll have to take out a loan to pay for the school, so my fear is when it's completed that I wont be able to get a job. The usual LPN listings are for those who have experience. So what is it going to be like as a new grad LPN? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!!

I dont know what its going to be like as new LPN grad, But I to am almost done with my CNA program and just like you I want to further my education to the LPN-RN route at my local college Palm Beach State, Lake Worth,FL. This week on Monday, an RN from JFK Hospital came to speak to us and she did inform us that they still hire LPN's. At first they got rid of them and the RN's refused to do all the work the LPN's did, so JFK hired them all back. It's been on and off since 1980. LPN's are usually hired at Nursing Homes, Assisted Living, Hospice. Im sure some do Home Health Care aswell. Hospital's do still hire them, maybe just mot as much.

Hope this helps a little Happy Easter!8_3_42.gif

Thank you for your response! It seems to be a rumor that has been going around for years about getting rid of LPN's. Sounds like it came true for a bit, but that's great that they are hiring LPN's again, gives me some hope! Good luck working as a CNA during your LPN-RN schooling!

Happy Easter!

As a new grad LPN I can tell you it takes patience and determination to get a new grad position. Knowing someone helps too. I started sending out resumes as soon as I passed NCLEX and have had a few calls now for interviews. Since its been less than a week since I passed, I'd say that's a good thing.

I am still working on my RN pre-/co-reqs right now too, but I really wanted to work as an LPN while finishing up.

LPNs are being phased out of some places, like some hospitals because they just train the CNAs to be PCTs, they change their levels with minimum training & let them do the things that LPNs would be able to do. However, LTC, SNF,home care, prisons, doctors offices, health care centers, testing centers, all still hire LPNs.
