The George Washington University (GW) and Georgetown University (GU) ABSN

Hi I just applied to both GW and GU ABSN. I was wondering what your experiences are like at these programs. I don't see alot of students talking about them.

Apply for the MedStar/GW Scholarship Program if you can. You do this by indicating your interest before submitting your application. If accepted, they'll reach out with next steps. That said, I know a few people who got into the program during their first semester, so don't stress if you miss it initially. Both MedStar and GW covers 40–60% of your tuition, depending on whether you sign a 2- or 3-year work commitment. A big perk: most of your clinicals will be at your assigned hospital, which helps you get familiar with unit cultures before your preceptorship.

Professors are generally friendly and want you to succeed, though a few mostly read from slides. Figure out your learning style early—it makes a big difference in how you study and succeed in this fast-paced program.

Expect to be on campus Monday–Friday for the first two semesters. In third semester, this lessens, and by fourth semester it's mostly online with occasional in-person days. For housing, check the student Facebook group or search in Ashburn/Sterling—many students live in those areas.

The campus is not in DC—it's in Ashburn, VA. Ashburn is in suburban Loudoun County, about 45 minutes to an hour from DC. This is important if you're expecting an urban setting or want to live near DC.

Most students are veterans. The VBSN (veteran) and ABSN cohorts are combined, and there's a strong emphasis on supporting veterans in the program. This was something I didn't know going in, so just a heads up.

Overall, GW is a solid program with a good reputation in the DMV area. Georgetown's ABSN is newer (although the university itself is more highly ranked), so that's something to weigh depending on your priorities.
