The future's wide open...

I'm a nursing student who is one semester away from employment. Yes, I'll be graduating in December (if all goes well). So naturally I'm sitting here pondering what kind of nurse I want to be. Of course I want to be the best nurse I can be, but that's not what I mean. What I'm wondering is what speciality (if any) I should get into after getting tagged with that wonderful "RN."

I've considered the ED, cardiology, gerontology, and peds. I've also thought about rounding my education out with two years on a med-surg floor before pigeon-holing myself.

What would you do? Or what have you done?

Thanks for the input.

Do a personality test and find out what sort of person are you. Do you like constant change or stability? Do you like to have everything in order or do you like to wing it? Different floor/units have different "personalities" for wont of a better word. Ask your clinical teachers what they see as a good place for you. The 4 areas that you wrote about are all very different from each other. Try to get some insight into what area would actually make you happy. At the same time be open to other opportunities. I wish you well in your job search.
