but I wan't really aiming for medical advice, mostly just wondering if it would be looked upon badly if I asked for light duty at clinicals, or if I should ask.

You need to ask your surgeon these questions. He/she is the only one who can advise if you need to take off from work/school.

Then, ask your advisor in your program.
