Testing for PN license after 1st year RN?

Published

Hi allnurses,

Is it possible to test for your practical nurse license after first four quarters of a registered nurse program? Would that be enough education to allow you to test? So you could get your LPN and still be working on your RN?

This depends upon the state where you live. And then, even if allowed in your state, it must be a policy of your school. Not all nursing schools will sign off on the paperwork for their students to do this even if allowed by the state. Ask your state nursing board. Or, even quicker, ask at the office of your nursing program.

Ok I will ask my nursing program. Thank you Caliotter 3.

Dear allnurses,

I talked to the BON in Washington state and they said that if you complete 4 quarters of a RN program you could ask for the Director of Nursing signature to test for Practical Nursing license and he/she would need to state you are safe to practice as a nurse. There are two WAC laws that cover this WAC 246-840-575 and WAC 246-840-030. They would need a copy of your transcripts. I think this is awesome that you can get your PN license while pursuing RN.
