Hi guys! I stumbled across this site while studying for my test! So I thought I would join and ask all you lovely people some advice! :) One of the topics of my test is Respiratory failure and we need to know Mechanical Ventilation and all the different modes. I was just wondering if anyone had an easy way to remember them! Thanks and if not I am sure I will be back soon with more questions! Thanks guys!

I am not at that point in my studies yet, so I will be no help to you. Just wanted to say welcome!

I am sure someone here can help you, though...keep checking back!

Your question reminds me of an old movie "what do you say to a naked lady" I will give you some terms to look up. Arterial Blood gases, how do you define respiratory failure? hint on that is in the arterial bloos gas. If the po2 is low, and the pco2 is high, the numbers meet in the middle, you have someone in Respiratory failure. That is a patient who needs ventilationwith the aid of a ventailator, not respirator, cuz there is no such term any more. Look up ventilator settings , know what an SIMV is, that means how many breaths per minute the vent is set at. Another buzz word is FIo2, or % of oxygen, room air is a 21% FI02, it can be set at 40, that is a patient who really needs asistance. when the artierial blood gas is drawn and the blood is the color of prune juice, get an intubation tray ready and follow the protocol of your instution, usually it is to call the primary physician. Really study arterial Blood gasses and you will understand how ventilation corrects most respiratory failure.

Thank you so much! I appreciate it!

the most important numbers and phrase to remember is High acidity low ph

Normal ph is 7.35 to 7.45

acid is low so if a ph is 7.25, a correction needs to be made to make is less acidic , or more basic they usually correct with something like sodium bicarb

If the ph is 7.50, it is to basic and needs to be neutralized , they correct it usually with a change in vent settings, or a drug called diamox, don't dwell on the drug treatment, just remember "high acidty, low Ph"

thanks barb! any recommendations on deciferying different modes....? control, control/assist, IMV, SIMV, CPAP?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks! I found a great site w/ detailed explanations. But now it's time for bed! Thanks for all your help
