Test Taking

I am having a big problem with test taking. I know the material well, but I can never seem to make above a 76 or 78 on an exam. I have talked to my professors and I have practiced questions. What is next? Are there any test taking strategy books you would recommend? HELP!

This is a definite problem that some face more than others. Here's just a few thoughts...

What do you mean when you say you know the material well? Do you really know it or just think you do?

How have your professors tried to assist you? What are their concerns? I've found most professors of mine to be very helpful. Several of my profs are willing to look over tests with me and help me figure out how to do better. I know not all profs care that much, but there are a few that do!

Is there a counseling center at your school? There is at mine, and they (for free...though I guess not technically since students pay a fee along with tuition every year) help you figure out if you are getting the most out of your study time, if you're just stressed, or if you have some sort of disability affecting your test taking ability.

I have a good friend who really knows her stuff and makes good grades on homework assignments and quizzes but does poorly at tests. She has anxiety, plain and simple. She still struggles with it and unfortunately it usually affects her grade, but she's learning to cope. I am definitely aware of the effects of anxiety. I deal with it often and for me it is mostly a matter of adjusting and learning to take deep breaths. :)

Anyway, that's just my two cents. If there's a counseling center at your school I'd definitely suggest that.
