Telling employer you're pregnant

Published

Hello,

I am currently a home care nurse. At how many weeks did you tell your employer you were pregnant? How did you communicate that message (email, phone, directly in person...)? My director lives out of state so I hardly see her (maybe 3 times a year). We usually communicate via email. I do have a supervisor in the office which I see once a week (I go to the office to hand in paperwork once a week). But again, my supervisor and I usually communicate via email. I am wondering if it would be appropriate to tell my news through email.

I wouldn't recommend it until it becomes relevant. IE, if it impacts work due to being unable to handle certain medications or situations.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

Definitely not until the second trimester. You want to make sure that everything is ok & you have no major issues.

Why do you have to tell them?

I ended up telling my employer at 10 weeks because I started bleeding and had to leave my assignment. Otherwise, I would've waited until I had activity restrictions or needed to file FMLA paperwork (my OB took forever and a day to do their portion).
