Telephonic Case Managemen interview in 2 days!

Have been a LPN for 4 years now mostly subacute & SNFs. Just graduated from an RN program. This would be my first job as TCM. I am in the Tampa bay area. Anything i4 should expect with this job. I also dont want to look greedy but also don't want to sell myself short on my salary. Anyone know what a good asking range to be around? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I am a TCM for a commercial insurance company. I've been doing it for 3 years and I love it. It's an adjustment and it has a different set of demands but it's much less stressful than on the floors. As far as pay, everyone is different and your experience will gauge that as well as your current rate. An offer should come on higher than your current rate. When considering an offer, think about what you make now plus a typical raise you would get if you stayed where you are. Also - and this is huge - consider the benefits. Working at a hospital typically gives you really good healthcare benefits. Moving to a non hospital employer could make that much more expensive. The per pay amount as well as deductibles/coinsurance could be much more than what you pay now. Ask them if they have a website you can go to where you can review the benefits. Even though I work for an insurance company, I have a very high deductible and HMO/ACO plans are not offered. .

Thanks a ton for the advice, if you dont mind me asking what area are you located in? Our insurance is pretty good better than my old job. The pay was significantly higher than my fellow collegues/ new grad RN's. Do you think it will be difficult for me to get a clinical position as an RN after a year of doing TCM?

I worked as a telephonic case manager for several years (including mgt). The salaries are all over the board - depends on your location and available nurses in the area. I know this sounds silly, but one thing we really looked for in interviews was how well the applicant spoke. We had people come in that could hardly speak English. For a telephonic position, a pleasant speaking voice and being able to speak clearly really is important. Also, being able to talk and type simultaneously is important. Good luck!

Thank You RIMSN! Were you the hiring CM, or the Director? How would you compare the stress level from the floor to CM? Did you have an MSN when working there?

The titles were different there, but I served in both roles. Several people would weigh in on each applicant, but I certainly had enough power to veto somebody. I once did a phone interview with someone who was yelling at me. I think she just naturally talked loud. I didn't bring her in for a face to face interview because I knew our claimants and employers wouldn't be able to build a rapport with her.I hope this advice is helpful.

Yea a person with a loud voice probably wouldn't do to well in an office enviornment. :) Very Helpful.
