Telemetry vs. Cardiac Stepdown at Brack in Austin

Published

I have a big decision to make!! I have been offered 2 great jobs at Brack in Austin. One is in the Telemetry/Internal Medicine unit (7th floor), and one is in the 12 bed Cardiac Stepdown/PCU unit. Both managers are amazing, so there's no deciding factor there. I like both units for different reasons! Tele would be a more broad learning experience probably, since it's usually varying diagnoses with cardiac hx. Cardiac Stepdown would be more critically ill patients obviously. But I really cannot decide which one I want to take.

Anyone have any history with either unit at Brack or in general??

I'm a long way from new-grad status, but I'm interested in working for Seton once I'm done. I have a couple questions, if anyone cares to enlighten me. :coollook:

I'd like to go straight to a speciality area, and one of the areas I'm considering is CCU. What is a stepdown unit? What special skills would nurses need there? Also, what kind of orientation do new grads get in that unit at Seton?

Thanks!

Specializes in IMC, ICU, Telemetry.

You're going to see a LOT of indigent & homeless @ Seton's ER as well - fresh off the street many times (not always cleaned, buffed & puffed, as they will become once admitted). All Seton campuses are not for profit, charity hospitals. While Brack will see many, Seton gets a fair amount as well.

Specializes in OBGYN.

editor2rn- with any job you take as a new grad at seton, you are going to go through their Versant RN residency program. It's 18-22 weeks, depending on your specialty, classroom and clinical hours to get you transitioned from student to nurse. so you'll have a great orientation to whatever seton position you take.

That sounds great. Thanks for the info!
