Technology in Nursing Education

Hi, I'm Bec, a theatre nurse from Australia. I'm currently studying a post graduate course in Nursing Education. One of my assignments is on technology in education, and I was wondering if anyone had any views on this topic.

Did you, for example, regularly use resources such as allnurses.com during your degree? Are you involved with nursing groups on Facebook or Myspace? Are the forums/groups you are involved in focussed on the theories, skills and knowledge required for nursing or are they more of a social outlet? Do you have an opinion on online education, particularly when compared to hospital based education? Answers to these, or any views related to the use of technology in nursing education, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks heaps,

Bec

Hi! I'm not sure if you still need comments on this topic for class. I am an adjunct faculty at a university nursing school. It is important to integrate a variety of teaching methods. Technology, such as Blackboard, can provide a medium for student discussions. This medium can allow a traditionally "quiet" student to "speak up" and feel more comfortable. I find that taking the extra few minutes to "walk" students through some of the basics of the technology that you plan to you use, minimizes the fear of computers. I teach how to look for a valid website with valid information. I caution students about citing from blogs, as it may not be evidenced based information/data. It is important for students to learn how to navigate and understand reliable research and information.

Hi all, I'm working on the same project currently (1 more class until BSN!) I'm wondering if you use other technology - hardware, software - - how are faculty supported and trained? Do you use simulators or VR? It is exciting to see and hear of the improvements in todays clinical or college experience! Thanks much for any feedback! :wink2:
