I am taking the TEAS in 3 Weeks. I am extremely excited and nervous at the same time. The percentile for the exam is going up next month havent been told yet exactly what it will be so I really have to do well. I am not really concerned about reading or language I did very well on the TABE. MATH AND SCIENCE are freaking me out. I dont know what to focus more on. Any advice would be great.
Thanks

hi msmiami,
i would definitely recommend you getting the McGraw Hills nursing school entrance exam book. it really helped me with the science section. im sure it could also help with the math portion of the TEAS too.
i was able to download the book for free by using rapidshare dot com. thanks to the info that was given to me by another allnurses user (timnug).
here's his directions: -perform a search on rapidlibrary dot com using "nursing entrance" as the search keywords and it should pop up as a .rar file. -download the file to a folder of your choice, use winrar to "unrar" the file. you will have the entire book at your fingertips in a .pdf format file. then use adobe to open it up.
i hope this helps.
p.s. if you cant find it or open it, let me know. i still have a copy of the file saved on my comp. i can send it to you.
Thanks pouty. I did see that info in another thread and have been reviewing it. It breaks things down alot easier especially the math. It gives you shortcuts which are important with the time constraint.
you're welcome.
the ATI guide is useless for the science part and so is the kaplan book.
i learned that the hard way--having to take the science part twice. UGH!:crash_com
the mcgraw hills book is the way to go for people who are worried about science.
btw, what school are you going to? im still waiting for my acceptance letter from sheridan tech in hollywood. but from what my counselor said, im "unofficially" in for the term starting in october. im still anxious and wont stop being anxious til i have that letter in my hands.....
Pouty,
I was debating between Mcfatter and Atlantic but I think I am going to stick with Atlantic (closer) . Went to orientation yesterday did my background, physical and titer to see what I am immune to. I am looking to start in January. Are you going days or evenings? I am still not sure which I prefer I am a morning person but the evening class get fridays off and apparently it is a little less hectic at the hospital in the evening. I am a little worried about the TEAS because apparently they are raising the standard percentile starting in October but havent provided us with the %. What are your thoughts? How well did you do?
i believe mcfatter, atlantic and sheridan are all sister schools. i also chose sheridan because its closer to me. that, on top of the fact that the wait wasnt quite as long as mcfatter or atlantic. im going to school during the day (ive got no choice---as sheridan advised us there wont be any evening classes til next year or even the next). it actually isnt that bad, since im not working right now anyway....
from what i know, sheridan requires you to pass the teas with a score in the 40th percentile or higher (at least thats what was posted when i first started the process). i passed all parts with scores in the high 80's. you do have the option to take it to raise your score, but i wasnt going to put myself through the test stress anxiety all over again. and besides, if you dont do better the second time around, youre outta luck because youre then stuck with your new scores.
as far as the teas goes, study, study, study. there are alot of tricky questions, even in the reading and english parts. i was always good in those subjects but didnt do as well as i thought i would. math was not that bad. but science was a killer for me. the first time i took it i totally bombed on the science portion. dont kill yourself over a&p---they only had one question on the test for this. they had questions about rock formation, general bio/chem questions and stuff you probably learned in high school.
like i said before, use the mcgraw hills book for everything. ive been out of college since '98 and it helped me out tremendously.
as for the process of getting into the program, here are some of my thoughts and wish i knew this beforehand.......
-if you dont have your hep b vaccines, start taking them now. they failed to tell us in orientation that the entire process for the hep b vaccines is about 6 months. if you dont have them completed, they are going to make you sign a waiver.
-get all of your requirements done and out of the way ASAP! i dont know if atlantic is the same way, but its first come first served. and theres a limit on the # of people they can accept in the program for each term. so, get your folder done and hand it in. i thought i was going to be able to get in for august term, but come to find out they were already full. so i had to wait another 9 weeks.
-one more thing, if you dont have any cpr, cna or any certificates like that, before you even start taking any nursing class, they are going to make you take the health career core classes. its about 5 weeks long (you have the option to take it online, but i heard its 9 weeks long). so you have to pass that first before you are able to take the major lpn classes.
other than that, good luck!
i should be getting my acceptance letter in the mail within the next week or two. the program counselor @ sheridan told me they only send them out at the end of september for the october term. UGH! guess, all i have to do now is wait........
Wow things are quite different between the schools. At atlantic they dont have a core class requirement it is incorporated in your first semester. Also I was told they give acceptance letters once a week. So if I turned in everything this week and passed my TEAS I would know by next week. Even if I wanted to start in January they allow you to register once everything is completed first come first serve. There are people already registered for April. I was told the passing percentage is 40% but it is going to be increased starting in October I assume that will be across the board at all the schools. Unfortunately the first slot they had for the TEAS was October 6 and are into November now. Things get filled up real quick thats why I want to make sure I pass the first go round. Thanks for all the information about science I will make sure to not focus so much on Anatomy. That is so bizarre to me! I would think they would focus on that not rocks.LOL!! GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING! Let me know how it goes once you hear back.
so much for them being called "sister" schools. LOL!
im sure you will do well, especially using the mcgraw hills book.
look over anatomy but dont go crazy over it. know the table of elements, rock formations and general bio/chem. a lot of the questions are common sense, you just have to be sure to read the questions very carefully. it could be a lil tricky and you may find yourself doubting yourself at times (at least i did the first time around).
other than that, GOOD LUCK!!!! and let me know what your results are.
and i will let you know when im "OFFICIALLY" in!
Thanks, Will do!
