Hello All,
I am a brand new member to this website and am seeking other student's or nurses' opinions on a teaching project. I am in my third semester of the nursing program at my school and I am to present to my clinical group an article I was given to read and "react" to. Anyway the article is about the bias against the older population once they are stricken with a CA diagnosis. Many oncologists look at their chances of survival as slim due to many elder's preexisting comorbidities. As prospective medical personal we know there are many ways around treatment even for the most complex patient. There is a chart in the article which describes the possible consequences the various chemotherapies may have on the older adult (such as adriamycin on someone with HF, etc.) I wanted to blow this chart up and hand it out but am not sure WHERE to go from there!? PLEASE help any input would be greatly appreciated!!

what is your goal....What are your trying to"teach".....
that's the thing... I am not sure exactly what "teaching" I can do with a topic like this. I can reinforce not to be quick to jump to a conclusion such as no treatment options.. but how should I go about doing so??
You could "teach them about ethical dilemmas they will face in their career as a nurse....what do you do? How do you deal with it....without seeing what the article says it's tough. How to object to ethical dilemmas or deal with them.... steps to take how to report an ethical dilemma. How to do advocate for your patient.......
Let me think about this.....
CureToday.com: Spring 2007 Article - "The Age Factor"
Sorry that would've been helpful... lol here's the link for the article.
Thank you so much for that! I really did not know where to start and that pretty much sums up the point I am trying to get across.
You could also teach them the special challenges in caring for the elderly patient and how age impacts care. As an age related competency.
YOu're welcome....it was a pretty close guess not reading the article wasn't I....
Good Luck!
lol amazing. comes with being an amazing nurse! :) thank you SO much!!
I don't know about amazing (although I am pretty good;)) it's also a long history in the same profession.
You're welcome...anytime:)

look at the abstract and then the conclusion the authors stated in the article. That is the purpose of the article and will be your purpose as well. Remember, it has to related to how the nurse will use it in practice. So write a teaching goal :
The purpose of this education activity is to enhance the _____________________________(identified gaps) of the Registered Nurse in the area of ______________(justification/rationale) by addressing _________________________________________________ (information to be covered) in an effort to ___________________ (outcome) as evidenced by ______________________________________.(measurement)
Hope this helps.
