Taking CRNI exam 3 weeks- HELP!

Published

I have some questions about the exam and I was hoping someone has taken it recently and can help me.

Most of the reference material is a few years old- The Core Curriculum, the textbook, standards. Does the exam still test on knowledge from these or will there be questions on more current info.

For example there are some newer antineoplastic drugs being used but they aren't in the Prep guide. Will there be questions on these or am I OK just studying the drugs in the Prep guide

Any other hints you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have taken that test every 3 yrs since 1991 to re-certify. So here is my advice...just keep studying from the INS textbook and the core curriculum and your outline...all that stuff will be on there. Make sure you really know fluid and electrolytes and infection control and practice...for example ,what IV antibiotics will be used for a Pseudomonas infection...for MRSA??....make sure you can easily tell acidosis from alkalosis and you know all the s/sx of high and low electrolytes. For me, those 2 sections were intense. For the TPN..make sure you know the s/sx of the deficiencies, such as low zinc...low iron. There is a chart in the book. As far as new drugs go,including the chemo drugs...sure look them over..it can not hurt. On the chemo drugs make sure you know the toxicities....they focus on that, such as Bleomycin can cause pulmonary fibrosis. Stick with all the basic topics and you will do fine. Last time I took it..I also found the blood and blood product section a bit challenging. I have always passed the test with high scores but I always went into it well prepared ...so keep studying and let me know when you pass...you will be a better clinician for having put in all the effort

Do you retest for the challenge instead of going to the seminars? Just curious. Thanks for your advice.

Remembering the different drugs both under Pharm and antineoplastic will be my struggle I think.

I appreciate any hints I can get.

No I always just re-test b/c its a lot cheaper and hard for me to get away...many are on the east coast and I wish they would come out west every other year...I think they are comimg to RENO soon
