Suturing and casting as a NP

Specialties NP

I was looking at few NP programs online but none seemed to mention suturing or casting. I assumed that a NP could do so. Is or isn't part of the scope of practice?

Thank you for your replies.

Splinting is done by nurses in many ERs. Full casts are not usually applied because of swelling. The patient usually has a follow-up with the orthpedic surgeon a few days later. Depends on the facility where you are working.

Specializes in Rural Hospital (we do it all).

I am currently working on my FNP and both suturing and casting were included as a set of core skills/procedures that are essential for primary care providers. Many skills taught in NP programs will still require exposure and development of expertise with a preceptor or on the job while working with an experienced provider.

Thank you for the latest replies.

I was finally able to get the answer. There is not a specific course for suturing and casting for a NP but it is covered is the " health assessement" courses.

Emory's ERNP program has info online
