Summer Micro Course

Published

So I decided to take Micro this summer in 10 weeks. My school will be looking at our nursing applications this week and sending out our acceptance/denials within the next two weeks. I do not want to have to deal with Micro this fall if I get in.

This course is hard! I think mainly because the prof. isn't really teaching. I go twice a week, two hours each day and he probably tells real life stories for at least an hour; things that will not be on the test. I am to the point that I have no idea on what to take notes on. He told us that by last Wed., he would have notes online and it wasn't done. Then he told us that by tomorrow Mon., they would be online and still nothing. He spends about 10-15 min. on each chapter and that's it. Micro is hard enough let alone getting a prof. that is not even teaching. Then when he found out that the entire class is pre nursing students, he decided to cut a lot of the material out. He then said that he likes to use the questions at the end of the chapters on exam plus definitions. So far we have finished 4 chapters last week and I am sure I will have over 200 definitions to memorize and that is not counting all the end of the chapter questions. He is also going to give us 4 quizzes and it will be on a chapter that we have not went over. So for example, tomorrow we have a quiz over chapter 5. He will let us use a partner, it will be open book and will give us 15 min. It's going to be a long 10 weeks.

Having a subpar teacher is the pits, you have my sympathy. My micro instructor didn't spend much time on things that wouldn't be on exams/quizzes, but there was a fair amount that we were expected to learn on our own from the text or handouts. I got through by knowing my learning style and study techniques that help me personally, and spending many hours learning the material. When your teacher is failing you or expecting you to teach yourself, all you can really do is rely on your own abilities. It's a lot of work, but it can be done! You'll probably get a better feel for what to focus on after the first quiz/test. Best of luck to you.
