Suggestions Learning Biology-Medical Terminology (online class)

Hello Everyone :)

I just found this site searching and its AWESOME!!! Can't wait to check it out after school today.

I was wondering if I could get some of your 'expert' opinions please. I'm in an "online", yep online unfortunately, biology medical terminology class and nn some help. First off, the class moves VERY rapidly. Taking this online is really hard since we don't have the instructor face-to-face 'saying' all of these words, etc. Our quizzes are EVERY week which normally cover 2-3 chapters.

Could someone please tell me a good way to learn all of these word parts, meanings, etc. I'm doing the flash card thingy and have about 400 for each chapter. I don't know if thats crazy or not. Being an online class also, it seems like I'm having to apply MOST of my study time to this particular class and neglect my other 3. I'm really frustrated right now and would like some suggestions!!

My goal is to become an RN. This is, of course, a required course. Just wish I had it in the classroom and not online.

If anyone could please tell me how they prepared and studied for this type of class I would GREATLY appreciate it. I know 'organization' is also key with taking an online class....but I nn some help in that area also. (this is my first ever online course).

Take care! I look forward to getting to 'chat' with all of u!!!

Have a great day!!

I took an online Medical Terminology course just for the heck of it. It's not required in any nursing program I applied to, but I figured it could only help. It does.

Like you said, memorization is the biggie. But you get to learn all of the parts that make up a word, so when you see something with "_itis" in it, you know it's inflammation of something. It just comes with seeing everything over and over, and even after you've had some A&P. All of the roots begin to make sense, and then when you get to the really big words, you can pick out all of the little parts, and can figure it out (and even pronounce it too! That impresses your nursing instructors!).

Luckily (and unluckily too, I suppose), my old college sold me the wrong Med. Term. book at the start of the course. I came with hundreds of pre-made flash cards. Then I found out it was the wrong one, but couldn't return it since it was a workbook and I'd written in it. I got the new one, but the flashcards were definitely worth paying double. I still have them and review once in a blue moon.

Hi Whitney!

Thanks soooo much for your reply. I really appreciate it. Geez...looks like u sure mastered all the words. I'm "freaking" right now!!! We have tests every Thurs (25 mins) and they cover 2-3 chapters each. The chapters are really really long too. I'm getting so far behind. I'm a perfectionist and can't handle that one bit. The thing is...when I start studying for this class, ALL of my time must go to this class and I have 3 others as well. Then I get behind in the others. I can't win!!! I'm a wreck I'm soooo upset!!! Especially since this course is 'required' for my major.

I know flash cards are key but right now with being behind in EVERYTHING...I don't have time to write them out. I'm only getting an avg of 3 hrs per night now cuz I'm constantly studying for one class or another. I can tell that I can't go on much longer like this or I'll drop from exaustion. I fall asleep reading my school books at night :crying2:.

Was this the ONLY class that you had when u took the online med term? I'm curious as to that. If it wasn't, how exactly did u organize ur time (if u don't mind me asking) between the online class and all your others? Organization is a HUGE problem here, I know!

If u can think of any other tips for me, please post them. Hopefully others will jump on here and respond as well!

Thanks again and have a great night!
