suggested undergrad courses?

what kinda courses would be good to take while completing my BSN to prepare for anesthesia school? i'm pretty much done with a BS in mathematics and should hopefully be starting my BSN next spring so i've already got a pretty decent amount of the core sciences required for BS degree. i was thinking about maybe picking up a minor in chem while i'm at it? you only hafta take about 17 credits worth of chem classes for it. that includes Ochem I/II and stuff.

idk i'll have a lot of free time once i start by BSN b/c i already did my core stuff when i was working on my BS in math. so yea just lookin for some other interesting courses that'd help prepare for anesthesia school. thanks!

Are you going to a regular or an accelerated program? If accelerated, you won't have much free time to take extra classes towards a minor. If not, I guess you could, but why not just go to an accelerated program instead? I have a previous BS, with a double major and a minor, and no one has ever asked me what my minor was in.

regular. they cancelled the only accerated BSN program here in hawaii recently. the minor thing isn't really that important. i was just looking at it as if i'm taking a buch've chem classes, why not? but if there's other classes that'd be better suited towards anesthesia then i'd be more than interested. my schedule once i start the nursing program looks pretty empty so far...

and course load isn't really an issue. i know nursing school's hard but i've been doing max credits the past couple semesters while workin aobut 30 hrs and getting straight A's. that's all sciences and upper divison math stuff. so yea just tryna get some idea on what else to take. thanks!

If you're already progressing towards chem, then pursue it - why not? Just keep an eye on the drop deadlines, and make sure that nursing is your priority in case it is harder for you than you think. I'm sure it's different at different schools, but I would think it looks better to have all As and a BSN with no minor than it does to have all Bs and a minor, even if it is a tougher one like chem. GPA isn't the be all and end all, but it has to be good enough to get you in the door. Good luck!

true true. i definitely plan on making nursing my priority. i actually haven't taken much chem beyond the basic nursing pre-reqs and BS math requirements so far. i'm really just looking for whatever would be most helpful in preparation for anesthesia. i know it's a long way off and my interests could easily change during nursing school but learning more stuff never hurts :)

any other suggestions?

I think organic and bio chem would be good. As well as stats. If you are planning on going to a CRNA program that grants an MSN see if you can take the core nursing classes as electives while to completeing you BSN. Things like graduate level nursing theory, research, and profess isuues/law and practice. Check with the programs you are interested in because these class might transfer in and demonstrate your graduate ability. No matter how you cut it, call the programs you plan to apply to and see what they say.

thanks.

my school does have a MSN program as well so i'll definitely look into what's available. wouldn't you need your BSN prior to taking most MSN courses though? or are there some that can be completed while finishing your BSN?

I took those classes as part of my BSN and I know of several other people who did also. Ask the school if they will let you. if not, take them as soon as you finish. Most colleges will let you take 2-3 graduate classes prior to enrolling in a program.

Good luck
