Sub Nurses

Published

I am in a district that is in 2 separate cities (rural). There are 2 schools in one city with sub nurses. There are 4 schools in the other city without sub nurses (various reasons). When one nurse is out, the 4 nurses cover for one another.

This is basically a whine post, I have been covering for one campus every time the nurse is out there, and this is first 9 weeks. I think its's around 6 days. It is where I worked last year, so it is only logical that I do it. The campus I am at now is much less chaotic than the previous school was. As I am typing the school without a nurse is calling me.

I'm tired, and frankly, not in the mood to cover my own campus, much less the other one today. I just needed to vent. I will enjoy seeing the kiddos I saw last year, I always do.

Working on my attitude, but needed to get that off my chest, and I suspect my colleague I usually confide in is sick of hearing me whine since we are on day 6!

So is your primary job to be a sub nurse? Or do you have your own school that you typically are at everyday? I get your whine, though...one nurse has already been out 6 days this year? Sheeshamonkey, as I like to say. That's a lot of days!

Here comes my whine. I currently have no sub. At all. I trained 2 subs last year. I spent 2 days training each of them. My job is, seriously, like the easiest nursing job on the planet. I have less than 400 kids, K-8. Each of those subs worked for me one day last year then when I needed them after that they said, "NO." Well, one of them said no. The other always had her husband answer the phone and he made that decision for her. Sure, she was older (upper 50s) but she still works part-time in pre-op and surely doesn't need her man to handle her affairs. I mean, what year is this?? Last spring I called from an ER bed with a K+ of 2.0 after being told I was being admitted, called these two subs and they still said no. Seriously?? They had no excuse except that they just didn't want to do it. Really, ladies??

That's when I said I would never call them again even though they are technically still on my available sub list. I'll drag myself in here dying before I ask them to work for me again.

So, I have one potential SAHM-RN who may start subbing this year but she's still going through the application and background check process and who knows when she'll become available. In the meantime, I'm rescheduling doc appts and all that jazz waiting for her to someday show up for training. It blows my mind that no one wants to sub here. When I started subbing I loved it and literally prayed the nurse would leave so I could have her job.

So, there's my whine. I'm sorry you're having to repeatedly go to the same school and jack up your schedule.

I am full time on one campus. My train of thought got off. The nurse on my previous campus is new, so most of the days were for required training with the state. Having no subs is so frustrating.
