Specialties NICU

Published

Hi everyone!

I just recently became a proud aunt to a beautiful baby boy who has been in the NICU for a week exactly today (12/21). He was six pounds, six ounces and 19 inches long. He was delivered via c-section at 38 weeks gestation. At birth, he was diagnosed with transient tachypnea and was put on antibiotics and a ventilator. After a couple of bad night, he is on a CPAP now - finally. They have attempted to remove the CPAP twice, but the first time, his breathing was over 60 per minute and the second time, which was today, his CO2 levels were high (48) and apparently the oxygen in his blood too? (This is what my mom told me).

I am a nursing major, and this all just does not add up to me. If he is a full term baby, who just happened to develop tachypnea, shouldn't he be improving by now? He seems to take a step back every time they try to get him off the CPAP. He is eating well (30 cc's) and as far as I know, everything else (like his heart) looks fine.

Are they missing something? Is there anything I should ask them to do? Has anyone taken care of a baby that has had this problem?

Thanks! Any help is greatly appreciated. I am so worried about him. :redpinkhe
