Studying in a French Speaking College, Then Working Outside of Quebec: Is it Feasible?

World Canada

Hello everyone,

I am considering becoming a nurse, but all my available options are in french speaking colleges, since I had the misfortune of being born in Quebec. My SO and I both speak english and we both have plans to move out of the province once we graduate.

I understand that I will be "elligible" to pass the exams required to enter the nursing orders of other provinces, but is it actually feasible if I study in French? I'm very fluent in both languages, but the terms used will probably be radically different, and so forth, right?

Basically, if I pass my OIIQ exam, is it possible to try and do the exams of other provinces or are the terminology and work methods simply too different?

I would appreciate any advice/stories of people that went through similar ordeals.

As some one who endeavoured to learn enough medical French to pass the OQLF exam, it's not impossible. If you pass the OIIQ, there's no need to take the NCLEX. It's just a matter of learning the vocabulary. Once you need it in practice, it won't take long to pickup.

If you're that concerned about language, there's Vanier and Dawson in Montreal (or just do a non-professional science DEC and go to an out of province university).

Also, I hope you know you'll need a bachelor of nursing degree to work as a RN in any other province.

Hi, good to see a recent post. I am average in french and an RN/BSN planning to immigrate into Quebec in 6 months time. I am already filing docs with the OIIQ. Can you please let me know if there are any jobs that can keep one going till he lays hand on the OIIQ license.....i.e. after landing? Thanks.
