Student in nursing program on medication

Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hi Everyone! I just started nursing school in March and am hoping to be accepted into the program by next fall. I was wondering though... I am on tylenol 3 for cervical disc deterioration. Am I going to have a difficult time finding a job? Thanks in advance!

As I do know pain.. will figure out another alternative in order to achieve my goal because it IS my passion.

Sorry to divert your question, but did you get your school's approval yet? My nursing school doesn't allow controlled substance in students' systems during clincals. Maybe you'd be OK if you get a doctors note saying that your medication won't effect your performance. I'm just curious of you've looked into that?

When Googling this topic, I saw that controlled substances can be taken by some nurses in specific cases in Alabama (& only as long as the employer says it's OK)... so, it seems likely that some other states would have similar laws.

Wouldn't it be nice to find another remedy before school starts (ha, ha, right)? I'm sure you've tried things, and Tylenol 3 may be best for you. Ugh. Chronic pain interferes with so much! Hope you find a way to manage it all. Good luck.

I feel your pain. I'm currently doing a trial of a Spinal Cord Stimulator. Good luck.

Thank you so much! I haven't inquired specifically with my school on the subject just yet but will be here very soon. I understand there is a steroid shot that I can take abd see how that helps... In the beginning, my intro to nursing teacher said we would have to have a script... but I wasn't even thinking about it because I never thought of taking tylenol 3 as "being under the influence "... until now. I guess time will tell. Thanks for your help and I will definitely be looking into it :)

Thank you, good luck to you as well! What exactly is a spinal cord stimulator?

It is two leads, one on each side. It sends signals up to your brain. It's supposed to interrupt pain signals. It didn't work for me, but it works great for some people.
