Student Nurses over 35 and Second Career????

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Hi everyone, new to the site! I love it! I did most of my research on the internet and found that this site was very informational and gave alot of life experience that I needed to help make this bold decision!

Okay, I'm 37 2 kids (age 2 and 13) and a devoted husband. I have worked for a very popular technology company for 14yrs! I've been a customer service supervisor, Buyer and now i'm a Accountant. Needless to say-I HATE IT.

With the economy the way it is, I thank God that I have a good job now but I don't want to mis this opportunity... I love encouraging and working with others, i'm very compassionate with it comes to people and making them better. I have no experience in the Health Care field and i'm very anxious about starting school. My plan: CNA night classes to began in fall 2009. Summer 09 I will take my math, biology, chem (during the evenign) classes for the Nursing pre-req. Spring 10 apply for the LPN program at community college then go into the LPN to RN bridge. I know I will have to eventaully quick my very well paying job at some point (probably when I'm accepted into the Nursing program) and that will be very challenging I expect. But that is why I want to get my CNA so at least I will have some kind of income coming in (75% less income than what i have now).

Is it realistic to believe that with my skilss that I may be able to work 2 jobs to regain my current income?

I currently also work from home 3 days a week, so studying won't be a probably.

Is there any of you that have similuar situations? I would love your feedback! Thank you all !!!!

Hey everyone. This is an encouraging thread. I am 36 and will be starting an accelerated program June 1st at OU in Oklahoma. I am very excited and have worked very hard completing the prerequistes to get into this program. I have two kids and am married. I'm nervous because the lack of funds coming into the household (I have virtually gone to not contributing to the mortgage due to working less) and this has made for a tense atmosphere at home. In addition, worrying about the eligible financial aid that I will be receiving because I have not gotten my award letter yet. I know that I need to just leave it in God's hands because he has brought me thus far. It is just bitter sweet to have been accepted into school but have this weight of finances looming over me. The courseload is going to be stressful enough I just wish. I didn't have the added burden of figuring out how it will be paid for. I have gotten off base with this thread but I guess I just needed to vent a little. I'm trying very hard to keep the faith. Good luck to everyone. It is great to know that being over 30 and starting nursing school is not a rare occurrence and is actually becoming more and more common. :specs:

Hello everybody,

Keep the faith, I played the waiting game and I got in. Go for it, I have been accepted to a parttime LPN program that begins in August. :smiletea2:(62 no kidding) it's just a number. Thanks for all the good advice.

Congrats to you!!!!!!!!! You go gurl!!!!!!

I'm new here on this forum and this is my first post, I just couldn't resist. I'm 33 and was laid off (along with 200 others) from my IT management position of 12 years. I'm a single mother of 2 kids, ages 5 and 3, with whom I share custody with my ex husband. I went to nursing school right out of high school but stopped shy to take a fantastic job opportunity and I have regretted it ever since. I've decided to take this time to go back to school. I had to repeat 2 prerequisites before I can go through clinicals and I'm currently taking those, and I've decided to go ahead and get my CNA in the meantime so I can get some experience and get my foot in the door somewhere. This is such a whole new thing for me, I'm not really in to taking risks, especially having full financial responsibility for 2 kids, but with the job market as it is, nothing is really happening for me at the moment. Anyway, the point is, I was really beginning to feel like such a fool for even thinking I can do this and I came upon this thread, and I wanted to let everyone who posted know you made a huge deposit in my bank of hope, so thanks and good luck to everyone!

Hi there! I am new to allnurses and I am 36 and just applied to nursing school. I stayed home with my children for many years, now I just finished my CNA courses and I'm waiting to hear if I get into RN school here in San Antonio or not. I have 3 children, ages 12, 9 and 5. I have help, my father and my boyfriend, but I can see now it's not going to be easy. Good thing I'm toughened up from all those years of marriage and raising kids!
