thanks in advance for any replies. i have started my ob rotation as a nursing student. i will be spending 2 8 hr days on the floor per week for five weeks. what i am wondering what is the best thing i can do to be helpful to the other nurses, stay out of their way, and get the most of this experience? as with any clinical experience i want to do the best i can and make an impression on a possible future employer.

Hi,

I'm and L&D nurse, and our students are typically "buddied up" with a preceptor, so they can shadow the nurse and hopefully see what goes on on a typical OB unit. If you want the chance to observe a procedure, etc., just ask. Many nurses are glad to oblige. Just keep your eyes and ears open for possible opportunities. Good Luck! Robin:)

The best students I've had with me have been the ones who aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and jump in. Ask, "What can I do/help with/get for the pt?" and you'll be seen as an asset by both nursing staff and the pt's family. Don't be afraid to ask questions; but if you can, hold them until your RN is finished charting, taking an order, or drawing up a med. She'll be much more likely to give you a comprehensive answer as opposed to a rushed two-word answer if she's busy.

Above all, be enthusiastic about what you're doing, even if OB isn't your thing. Your patient is allowing you to be a part of a very personal and life-changing event- be respectful (no gum-popping) and keep the patient's privacy in mind, and you're sure to have a great experience- good luck!
