Stuck between ER & ICU as a new RN grad

Published

Hi! I'm a new nurse grad and I'm still waiting on my ATT here in Ohio and it still may be another week or so before I schedule my NCLEX. Yesterday, I had my first RN interview in the ER at a large health network's hospital in my area that I've wanted to work at for many years, especially now that they are requiring their new RN grads to go through a residency. The nurse recruiter from the headquarters forgot to schedule my ICU interview yesterday but said she wants me to call back to schedule one for next week and after that I went to my ER interview after interviewing with her. After my ER interview, I was offered to job shadow in the next couple days. After leaving the hospital, I called the recruiter back and we scheduled my ICU interview. She also told me I was offered a JOB ALREADY in the ER that I just walked out of because the nurse manager emailed the recruiter back quickly afterwards. She told me I can wait until after my job shadow and after I interview in ICU to make my choice because she felt like there are good chances I will get to choose between the two units. These are two areas of nursing that I have truly had a passion for throughout nursing school. During my senior Capstone, I was able to spend a few months in the ER of one of the facilities in this network and I absolutely loved it there along with my preceptor and the other staff members, so I feel like I know the ins and outs of the ER at this point. But during my second to last semester in nursing school, we were able to spend a great amount of time also in ICU, which I really enjoyed because I got so much hands on, critical thinking experience, time management opportunities and more. If I was to be offered both positions, how do I choose between the two? Any help/advice would really be appreciated! Thank you
