I am a student that attends a junior college and am taking classes to transfer to a university to become a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree. Recently i have been having thoughts that nursing might not be for me, Nursing school is very competitive and a part of me feels I will not be smart enough to get the gpa needed to compete. I don't know if I'm just psyching myself out or if I should go with these feelings.
There are so many good reasons why I want to be a nurse. I am just really stressed out about life and not being able to support myself. That is why I want a career like this so that I can have a stable life ....can you give me some advice on what I should do ...thank you
Dear Stressed Out,
What changed since you started college that caused you to think you cannot make the grades? Are you struggling or failing classes? Or are you projecting?
Nursing school is competitive, and demanding. You will be more stressed than you are now once you make it into nursing school.
One thing I've come to believe is that nurses are a determined bunch of people. Yes, of course you have to be smart- nursing is academically challenging- but being smart without determination is not enough.
You need determination as well as aptitude. If you want to be a nurse more than anything, you will find a way. You will get a tutor, you will repeat a class if necessary, you will persevere until you reach your goal. In the last cohort at my hospital we hired a new grad who was homeless for the fourth semester of her program, and slept in her car. She passed her NCLEX and has a stable future, career-wise.
Are you determined to see it through? Does this sound like you? If so, you will make it. Keep us posted and find a support group. Check out what other students are saying here on site at the student forum.
