Stress question!

Published

You have been under a lot of stress because of an up coming exam and your glucocorticoids become elevated. What would you expect your levels of CRH and ACTH to be?

b.

ACTH low but CRH high

a.

ACTH and CRH both low

Glucocorticoid production is on a negative feedback system so if cortisol is high(for example) then that would tell the hypothalamus that your homeostasis is back to normal and to stop producing CRH which in turn will tell the anterior pituitary to stop producing ACTH. Both the releasing hormone and effector hormone would be low if the stimulating hormone is high. Answer is a.

Thank you!:thankya:

This isn't for the question...just for my general knowledge. But isn't high levels of cortisol in the body bad? The body sees an elevated cortisol as homeostasis being normal?

That would explain why it's so easy to get stressed all the time

High levels of Cortisol is bad, basically your body is under stress. If your hormone homeostasis doesn't return to normal then your go past the flight or fight response and go into the resistance reaction stage. Cortisol changes your bodies metabolism and you start to use protiens and fat instead of glucose for energy. If your body doesn't return back to homeostasis (stressor is no longer there) then you go into the exhaustion stage and eventually death.

Cortisol is good for short term stress but high levels in general is not good for homeostasis. After the flight or fight response the cortisol level should go back to normal unless the stressor is still activating CRH.

It's easy to get emotionally stressed and it's important to find ways to de-stress. Especially when test anxiety, time management and life in general is always "testing" our sympathetic response. This is probably more information than you wanted but when I get on a roll I can't stop lol.

I hope this helps.

No no this is perfect thank you! :) I'm always excited to learn, and especially about this topic because I've been under so much stress and I wanted to know what it can do to my body. I remember my professor saying that if the body is exposed to cortisol for a long time it can lead to cushing's disease.

Once I heard that, I made it a habit to "chill out" once in a while, and have some time for myself without thoughts of school, tests, relationships ect :smokin:

Thank you again :)

Your welcome hopefulUS. I get stressed out a lot too. Sometimes I just plan a day for myself that doesn't include studying so I can relax and take a break. I think it helps in the long run to unwind and start fresh. Another thing I try to do is get plenty of sleep. The more I learn the more I realize that having enough sleep is just as important as having a good diet. Brains need a recharge too lol.
