stehoscopes don't actually amplify. They are made to block out ambient sounds. The best is to find a double lumen scope. There are two inside (one for each ear) and they are surrounded by an outside layer.
I have used some of the lightweight Littmans, had a Classic SE II, and now have a Cardiology III. HUGE difference. The SE II was so-so. The cardiology III is the only one I can actually hear well with. I left if at home one day and had to use a spare the unit keeps around...a light weight...and I couldn't hear a thing.
Everybody is different though, and I really believe that no one scope will suit everyone. Try to find a store that lets you try scopes out before you use them.
Also, you should be trying to minimize background noise as much as possible anyway. Ask the patient to stop talking (difficult sometimes I know), turn off the television, the radio, whatever. If you have to, do the same with the roomate.

I seem to be having a hard time hearing with back ground noise and I was wondering if you with experience can recommend a stethoscope that amplifies well.
Getting a tad frustrated. Can hear normal otherwise.
Thanks,
Jill
