Stay with ASN path or switch to BSN?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So to make a long story short I have a degree from another college and decided to start nursing pre-reqs this fall. Originally I wanted to enroll in a ASN program at community college so I could save money and pay out of pocket, but I met with an adviser today and now my plans are kind of a mess.

To get into this specific ASN program I would have to take AP I&II, Chem, Microbio, Human Development and Ethics. Now I'm being told that I need to take an extra biology class and math class. I'm hoping they can confirm my math class from my first degree and get that knocked off. The real problem is the extra biology class. It's a pre-req of AP I which means I have to take bio this semester and then AP I spring semester. This would be okay if it didn't mean I would have to take AP II the following semester (Fall 2018) as my only class. It's a bit frustrating to say the least. I would only have to take these extra classes for this program.

My other option is to just take the typical nursing pre-reqs of BSN programs I've been looking into. I would only have to take AP I&II, Micro, Chem, Human Development, Ethics, and Nutrition and could finish those in one school year and start a nursing program come Fall 2018.

I know some people might suggest a ASBN, but it's just way too expensive for me, so these are my realistic options.

Hoping someone can advise me on what to do. I have about a month to decide.

Well, if the BSN program is easier course-wise, and gets you started in the nursing program quicker, I would go with that. If there were little difference between the two courses of action, I would advise going for the BSN from the get go anyway. Like Nike says, when it comes to the BSN, just do it.

Go BSN all the way. It seems to be the easier option for you since you say it would be less time consuming and it will give you a chance to be in a nursing program much sooner.
