Staten Island/ Long Island Commute to Manhattan

Published

Hi NY commuting nurses...

Just wondering how the commute from Staten/Long Island to Manhattan is. Do you drive? Public transportation? Is it reasonable to think you could live in Manhattan and commute to Staten or Long Island for work, or vice versa?

Thanks!

Cannot speak for Long Island, but as a native Staten Islander can only offer this advice.

As an island there are three ways to get on/off SI, each has it's own benefits and problems.

Public Transportation: Ferry, MTA Bus (goes over the VZ bridge from Brooklyn, but you can take the subway to and from that stop to get into Manhattan via Brooklyn), MTA Express Bus routes going to and from Manhattan to SI, and vice versa), driving a car to reach the Island either via Brooklyn or New Jersey.

Obviously many persons commute off SI to work in Manhattan every day, you just need to decide what method will get you to work and back that suits your needs and purse.

If you live on SI you probably already know public transportation is not all that great, especially for areas of the South Shore. Traffic has become a nightmare over the years as the Island has built out, putting a heavy toll on roads, highways and bridges. If anything happens on the VZ or other bridge you can be sitting in traffic for hours just to get off the Island, then you still have to make it into Manhattan.

During the day and or anytime traffic is heavy, would choose the ferry then subway if at all possible.
