Hi,
I'm starting Nursing School in the Fall of 2007. Can anyone give me some advice on what to expect and what I should prepare for. I have a lot of anxiety...not knowing what to expect.

hi, lashonda-123!
here is a very recent thread started by an lpn student who posted every day for the first 7 or 8 days of her classes, to give you an idea of how things went for her. keep in mind that this was an lpn program and lpn students usually go for full days every day of the week and work at a much faster pace than rn students.
here are a handful of links to some of the fundamentals of nursing syllabi i've found on the internet. these may not be what are going to be taught in your program, but at least it is something for you to look at and contemplate.
keep in mind that we all started out at the beginning and that we were all scared and nervous. i, myself, used to get physical sick (nauseated) every day as i was walking into my clinicals because i was scared to death i was going to accidentally kill someone. i am happy to report that i haven't killed anybody in 34 years years yet. you are not alone and you are not the only one to feel this way. i survived. many others before and after me survived. you will survive too.
don't be a stranger to the student nursing forums. you will find a lot of help and support here as you are going through nursing school. welcome to allnurses! :welcome:
Thank you....this information has been very useful. I definately received more insight on the first day of program and now I know that there are many other people out there that's having some anxiety and fears about starting Nursing School. This website is very helpful because it inspires me. I have not even started Nursing School andI feel like given up already...after reading this I will not quite.
Thank you!!!!

The first days for me where pretty intense as we didn't go to the hospital for the first 4 weeks. Our instructors called in nursing boot camp, as we front loaded alot of information with every day spent in lecture for about 6 to 7 hours per day. The purpose was so that when we first report to the hospitals that we can actually do things for the patients, such as nurse assessments, nursing Dx., careplans, bed baths, bed making with a patient in it, just the basics.
It sounded intimidating at first but it went real smooth as soon as we got into the groove of things.
I know saying not to worry about it isn't going to work, as we all have anxiety about the unknown. Lets just say take it easy, it will all fall into place for you. P2
Side note...please don't say things like "super nurse" to Daytonite, she'll have to get a bigger memory for her computer for the swelling ego!
Ah I kid Daytonite, I love ya too! I always read her posts, very smart and thorough with her postings.
Ha! Ha! No. If anything I tried to keep as low key as possible. I'm sure you've read some of those posts about students in the class who overwhelm everybody else with their comments and statements. I tried very hard not to do that because I didn't want people to get ticked off with me. Even as a staff nurse, preceptor and supervisor I did the same. I tried to get people to do the speaking up first and then do some fancy communication techniques to get things rolling. It's very hard to do that on the Internet where you are addressing a group or answering a post.
Hi Daytonite, I'm currently going into my last semester in Nursing school. Starting on January 20th we will be going over GI, GU and Neuro. We will also be taking a comprehensive HESI and the end of the Nursing program HESI. I'm nervous about them all. Is there any advice you can give for GI, GU and Neuro as well as the HESI?
Thank you!
i have no information on the hesi. i would suggest using the critical thinking flow sheet for nursing students to study the individual diseases in gi, gu and neuro. know the steps of the nursing process and how to incorporate them into your practice. this is something that you should know by graduation. you will be tested on it when you take nclex. it is the problem solving process and it is one of the most important concepts you should have learned in nursing school.
